ATC Trophies

July 1, 2016

Want to know what makes for a dream project for this conservationist and artist? Having the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) approach me to help them create a trophy. Each year, ATC coordinates the Appalachian Trail Garlic Mustard Challenge where groups of volunteers compete to remove the most garlic mustard (Alliara petiolata) from along the trail. The good people at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Office, here in beautiful Boiling Springs, wanted a trophy with a personality to match.

After a few conversations, I came up with the design and asked my better half for some help with the woodwork. This beautiful spalted maple came from the obnoxious norway maple on our property, which we are slowly picking away at. As well, the garlic mustard was guiltily growing in my yard. Metal components in this project are brass. In the photo below, the trophy is flanked by two plaques, all ready to be engraved with the winning team’s name.
