Marathon Ring
This year’s Boston Marathon was a special one. My sister in law, Alyssa Dourte, ran for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in their Boston Team in Training! We were and are so proud of her efforts on and off the track. I knew I wanted to commemorate the event, but the Boston Athletic Association’s logo is off limits, so I found an old map of Boston. Zooming in on the finish line, with the B.A.A.’s location on the map was the solution. Using sterling silver sheet and two gauges of wire, I formed the ring blank and bezel cup. Then I affixed the map and set it in resin until it was domed like a traditional cabochon. From afar, the map even looks like an interesting stone. It’s subtle, yet meaningful. Creating this ring helped me concentrate on her accomplishments, what she was striving toward and the reasons why she was running.
